3G Mobile devices allow users to access multimedia content without being tethered to a wired broadband network. However, the RF signal propagation constraints make it difficult, if not impossible, for the 3G devices to operate within the user's home environment. Femto Cell technology solves this problem by creating a miniature cell that can be installed inside the home and allows users to have the same multimedia experience inside as well as outside a user's home. Femto Cell Access Points being deployed in the network today primarily use ADSL Transport to access the 3G core network. The maximum downlink speed of the ADSL transport depends on various factors such as distance from the CO and is limited to 7 Mbps. The maximum available bandwidth of an ADSL becomes a serious issue, when more than one 3G mobile device user from inside the home try to access multimedia content at the same time . The bandwidth constraints of the ADSL transport can be easily addressed by integrating Femto Acess Point into next generation FTTH technology such as GPON.
