DCC Solution For SONET/SDH

OCS Delivers SONET/SDH DCC Solutions

Deployment of SONET/SDH based network equipment continues to grow as carriers extend the reach of fiber from central offices to business locations. As the size of SONET/SDH networks grow and as carriers start deploying systems from different vendors, managing these networks have become increasingly difficult and complicated. To reduce the cost and complexity of managing these networks, carriers rely on embedded Data Communication Channel (DCC) within a SONET/SDH frame and expect vendors to provide equipments that are interoperable with the SONET equipments that are already deployed in their networks and also support DCC standards such as Telcordia's GR-253 and ITU G.7712.

OCS-DCC Package Competitive Features:

Designed to meet your present and future business needs, it includes many features not found in other solution suites. OCS-303 package supports the following features:

  • Fully Integrated
Unlike other products in the market place, OCS DCC package is not just a collection of protocol components. It is a fully integrated package that includes all the protocol components and supporting modules required to implement a GR-253 compliant SONET DCC solution.
  • Short Development Time
The protocol components and software modules within the OCS DCC package have been tightly integrated with a set of well-defined API functions. The API functions are defined to hide the intricacies and complexities of OSI protocols and allow users to integrate DCC software components into their target system quickly.
  • Portable OS
DCC package is portable to any real time operating system environment. OS wrappers are used to hide operating system dependent portion from the main software components. To port from one operating system environment to another, a user needs to replace only the OS wrapper functions.
  • IP Tunneling
OCS DCC package includes support for static and dynamic IP tunneling. This feature allows users to tunnel IP traffic through legacy SONET network elements that support only OSI protocols.
  • TCP/IP OSI-7 Mediation
OSI DCC package supports TCP/IP to OSI-7 layer protocol mediation. Support for this feature in GNE would allow OSSs to manage downstream SONET NEs through IP DCN
  • Distributed Architecture
OCS DCC package has been designed to support centralized as well as distributed architecture. In a large SONET system with many SONET interfaces, OCS DCC package provides the capability to distribute the lower layer stack functions to line cards.
  • Standards Compliant
OCS DCC package conforms to Telcordia's GR-253 requirements and also supports IP Tunneling feature as recommended by ITU G.7712.
  • Mature and Field-proven
OCS DCC package has been extensively used by leading SONET equipment vendors for more than six years
  • Multi-platform Support
OCS DCC package has been successfully ported to more than 10 different SONET products involving 5 different CPUs and three different operating systems
  • OCS Expertise
OCS has been providing OSI 7 layer based solutions for SONET equipment vendors for more than 10 years and has used its vast expertise in SONET DCC area to develop a package that are interoperable with SONET DCC implementations of leading SONET equipment vendors such as Fujitsu, Lucent, Nortel and Alcatel.
OCS DCC Solutions
OCS' standards-based, off-the-shelf DCC Solution shortens the DCC implementation time and is designed to provide interoperability with SONET/SDH NEs from vendors such as Fujitsu, Lucent, Nortel and Alcatel. OCS offers two standards-based DCC packages that can be used to quickly implement an interoperable DCC solution with products that are already deployed in a SONET/SDH ring. These two packages support a full OSI 7-Layer Stack and a Short Stack. OCS' solution is designed to be hardware and operating system independent and can be easily ported to most hardware/software platforms.

OCS-DCC package is offered in two versions: as a full stack and a short stack. The full stack version incorporates all seven OSI layers as specified in GR-253 and the short stack version incorporates OSI layers one through three. Both full stack and short stack versions include API for integration with customer developed application and low-level drivers. For customers who develop SONET/SDH terminal equipment, OCS offers a package called "IP Tunneling-Lite" which includes all the components of a Short stack with the exception of IS-IS protocol. OCS-DCC package also includes the following two features:

  • ITU G.7712 compliant IP Tunneling Module for IP Relay through OSI network (included in both OSI-7 layer and Short stack packages)
  • NSIF-033-1999 compliant TL1 translation device (T-TD) for converting TL1 traffic over TCP/IP to TL1 over OSI (included in OSI-7 layer package)

OCS-DCC package incorporates standards compliant protocol components that are customized to meet all SONET/SDH DCC specific requirements. OCS Solution is designed to be both hardware- and operating system-independent and can be easily ported to most hardware/software platforms.

Additionally, OCS has developed and implemented capabilities in NEs that allow firmware upgrade to be done from a remote site. This feature is often referred to as remote software download. OCS has also implemented a Remote Memory Backup feature that allows the management system to retrieve the configuration database from a NE and store it in a local database. The remote memory backup feature allows the service provider to quickly restore service when database gets corrupted, by re-provisioning the NE with the configuration database stored as a backup.

Software download and remote memory backup features are implemented as per NSIF-033-1999 File Transfer Translation Device (FT-TD) requirements using standard file transfer protocols such as FTP and FTAM. While Implementing software to support remote software download and memory back up capabilities, OCS has addressed issues such as:

  • Reduction of download time
  • Maintenance of data integrity
  • Ensure smooth in-service firmware upgrade
  • Provision of recovery mechanism in case of failure
